I Choose You Today

I Choose You Today: 31 Choices to Make Love Last
About The Book:  A reminder why you chose the one you married and 31 ways to choose to love them every day.  Married for nearly 38 years, author Deborah DeArmond and her husband have made the spoken declaration, “I choose you today” a regular part of their communication. It’s when we least feel like saying it that we need to remind ourselves that love is a choice, not a feeling. I Choose You Today features 31 scriptural principles that support marriage and help couples develop healthy biblically based behavior.  Built on an introductory anecdotal story, each chapter has an inspirational takeaway of not only what to do, but how to begin applying the principles immediately. Thought provoking questions create talking points for couples to explore their own choices and experiences in each area serve to generate open dialogue of discovery. I Choose You Today is not a book of "shoulds," but one of clearly identified choices that each individual can make to grow their marriage and align it with the word of God. Every saying ends with a conventional wisdom quote.

My Thoughts On The Book:  Having just celebrated my twelfth wedding anniversary I found this book to be  a must read for newly and oldy weds too.  This book is a great counseling tool and is full of sound advice that makes you sit up and pay attention to. As a pastor I plan to make this book one of my counseling books.  The book is filled with many scripture references that are helpful and Deb's stories in each chapter are touching and easy to relate to.  If you want a marriage that will endure then this is the book for you.  Loved it!

Grief: A Mama's Unwanted Journey

About The Book: Grief: A Mama’s Unwanted Journey is the book you want no one to need yet know at some point in life, everyone will. It is for those walking through the searing pain of grief and also for those walking arm-in-arm with a loved one along grief's tumultuous journey. Shelley Ramsey knows this pain well. Eleven years ago Ramsey’s oldest son Joseph died in a single-vehicle accident. Shelley chronicled her deeply personal reflections and arduous journey through grief in Grief: A Mama’s Unwanted Journey.
"Great grief is a ferocious fire. It can be a destroying or a refining fire-or both at once. This book combines searing honesty with wisdom and consolation. Most importantly, it offers realistic hope that while grief and suffering are real words-about the lost one and those who have lost-they do not have to be the defining or final words. That final word is love, something that even suffering does not erase." -Daniel Taylor, author of The Skeptical Believer  "'We cannot walk out of the cemetery and into life as we knew it. We must take time to grieve.' So says my friend Shelley, who knows the path to her son's grave well. If you are tired of platitudes, tired of the trite but untrue, this book is for you, as real and raw as it gets. Grieving moms, walk with her, learn from her successes and her mistakes, and hold her hand on the unwanted journey in the storm-tossed life-boat of grief. She will guide you safely back to sanity's shore." -Dane Skelton, pastor of Faith Community Church and author of Jungle Flight: Spiritual Adventures at the Ends of the Earth

My Thoughts On The Book:  This was by far the most difficult book I have ever read.  My heart broke for the family from the very beginning of the story and hurt for them all the way up until the end.   I can only imagine the struggle Shelley Ramsey had writing it.  It was a soul bearing story and she held nothing back.  This is probably the hardest review I have ever written.  I do NOT know what it is like to lose my seventeen year old son, but I felt my own soul reaching out to Curt and Wyatt because I too am the surviving sibling of a tragedy like this.  Our walk is different than that of the parent's walk....but it is still a walk we took.....and our lives too were changed in the blink of an eye.  Ramsey addresses each member of her family, their personal grief and how they "cope."  This book helped me an adult surviving sibling to understand what happened to my mom the day our family fractured.  The book contained a lot of "do's" and "do not's" for those on the outside of the death.  It was tender, raw, emotional, and I found myself having to put the book down and leave it when it hit way to close to home.  As a pastor, this book would be a wonderful healing and counseling tool for someone experiencing such a loss and wondering, "Where is God?"  I would highly recommend it.

A Christian Survival Guide

A Christian Survival Guide: A Lifeline to Faith and Growth
About The Book:  What enables some to survive as Christians when so many others falter? Without resorting to empty answers, clichés, relativism, or smug certainty, A Christian Survival Guide provides an accessible and safe place to deal with issues that can give Christians sleepless nights. By focusing on spiritual practices, discussing solutions to faith struggles, and offering perspectives from multiple Christian traditions, this survival guide moves readers into a thriving relationship with God, even if that means not necessarily finding all the answers.
A Christian Survival Guide doesn’t run away from the big, tough questions of life like:
• Does the Bible have to be “true”?
• Where is God in an evil world?
• Did God sanction genocide?
• Is hell eternal conscious torment?

• Does money keep us from following Jesus?

About The Author: Ed Cyzewski is the author of Coffeehouse Theology and the coauthor of Unfollowers: Unlikely Lessons on Faith from Those Who Doubted Jesus and The Good News of Revelation. He is a freelance writer who has contributed to numerous magazines and book projects. He writes about imperfectly following Jesus at www.edcyzewski.com.
My Thoughts On The Book:  This book is not a heavy hitting, verse by verse study.  It is however an easy to read, sometimes uncomfortable, lifeline for today's Christian who needs some answers.  In his introduction is an encouragement to examine your way of thinking and go from surviving to thriving.  He tells shows us in the introduction that surviving is not something you just do.....surviving takes planning.  He gives us some insight into the marks of a Messy Christian vs a Happy Christian and how both can fail to thrive as a follower of Jesus.  That was eye opening for me!  The book is then divided into two parts.  Part I deals with Christian beliefs and although I did not completely agree with some of his thoughts I could see where Cyzewski was coming from.  Each chapter was short and easy to read which would not bog down someone looking for some answers.  Part II was on Christian Practices and the most startling chapter for me dealt with bad churches happening to good people.  This one touched close to home.  Overall I enjoyed reading the book.  It made me uncomfortable at times.  I gave me some answers.  I would share it with friends I know are struggling for answers.
