Last Hodge Podge for October. Where Has This Year Gone?

Joyce has been traveling the past two weeks, and needed to regroup before diving back into regular blogging. Whatever regular blogging means? In the meantime, let's hodgepodge. 1. What's surprised you most about your life or life in general?
Changes later in life.  I always thought I would retire from BRHS and be retired, but after the mega snow/ice storm I found myself starting over at Randolph County.  The drive is gone, I am home before I ever left BRHS and I leave my house in the morning when I was getting to my old school.  I love it.

2.  Sweet potato fries, sweet potato casserole, a baked sweet potato, a bowl of butternut squash soup, a caramel apple or a slice of pumpkin pie...you have to order one thing on this list right now. Which one do you go for?  I would choose the pumpkin pie.

3. What's a famous book set in your home state? Have you read it? On a scale of 1-5 (5 is fantastic) how many stars does it rate?
Stars Fell on Alabama  would be what first comes to mind. I found it more interesting as a cultural artifact than as a reading experience. Although it was difficult for me to read some sections (like depictions of lynchings), I'm especially glad they were included as documentation and confrontation. I'm sure it was extremely risky for him to write about such things, even while using pseudonyms. Overall the book's really loosely structured--some folk stories, some narrative, somewhere between journalistic and creative nonfiction, --and that style, or lack thereof (possibly combined with the fact that I already sort of knew or expected some of the content), made it a bit difficult for me to feel invested. There are no real threads other than "this is what this part of Alabama is like," so when I closed the book after a chapter, I didn't feel highly compelled to read the next. I think my favorite section is the chapter towards the end that gives spells for john the conquer root, and some of the african american ghost stories and folk tales. I also found the first few chapters on social life in Tuscaloosa interesting, as some things are very much the same (umm, yes, frat students still ditch classes to go to formals, and there are certifiable debutante balls). It is also true that Tuscaloosa was and *currently is* clearly divided into "From heres," "university people," and poor people and minorities... ".  It would be a 4 in my thoughts and is for people interested in history.
Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistlestop Cafe  would be my second choice.  It was written by Fannie Flagg.  It's first the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women -- of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth, who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.  I have eaten at the Whistlestop Cafe in Irondale, AL and enjoyed the whole experience.  It would be a 5.

4. There are 60 days until Christmas...have you started your shopping? How do you stay organized for the holidays?  I am almost done.  I shop all year so I can get the good bargains.  When I buy something I put it in the gift closet with the person's name on it.. 

5. October 26th is National Tennessee Day. Have you ever lived or spent any time in Tennessee? Is this a state you'd like to visit one day? The top rated tourist attractions in Tennessee are-

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park (Gatlinburg area), Elvis's Graceland (Memphis), Birth of the Music Biz (Memphis and Nashville), Dollywood (Pigeon Forge), Tennessee's Military Heritage (many battlefields), The Hermitage (Andrew Jackson's home), The Parthenon (Nashville), Oak Ridge American Museum of Science and Energy, Chattagnooa and the Tennessee Valley Railroad, Downtown Knoxville, Lookout Mountain, The Titanic Museum (Pigeon Forge), The Museum of Appalachia (Clinton), and The Lost Sea Adventure (Sweetwater)

How many on this list have you seen? Which one on the list would you most like to see?

I love Tennessee.  We go there quite often.  I have a best friend in Knoxville and a sister in Nashville.  I have seen all the attractions listed above, but my favorite place to be is in Cades Cove.


6.  Insert your own random thought here.  My daughter is coming home from Moldova.  Not permanently....but they will land here at midnight on the 26th, spend the night in Atlanta, then start their furlough and fund raising.  They will be here until Dec 4th and I am so excited I can hardly stand it.  I am off the 30th and plan to spend time with them then.  This is their first time home in two years.  This momma is thrilled beyond measure.

1. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your sense of direction? 1=can't find my way out of a paper bag and 10=if I've been somewhere once I can find it blindfolded ten years later.
When was the last time you looked at/used a map you could hold in your hand? (phones don't count!)

Choose one of these directional expressions and tell us why you chose it.

I will rate myself at least a 5. I have gotten used to using my maps app on my phone, but I can still follow written directions and read a map.  I'm from down south/and back east(Florida), I live down south(Alabama), I love to head out west, and plan to do some traveling up north when I retire in May.

2. Did you do more talking or listening yesterday? Is that typical? Describe your yesterday in one word.  Yesterday I listened more than talked.  Remember I teach....so talking is what I do for a living. I prefer listening....so I can create your story in my head.  Is that typical? Typically I think I lean more to the talking side of things, but only when I am in my classroom.   Yesterday (Monday) in one word? Frustrating

3. Time, money, water-power-resources, opportunity...which one on the list are you most guilty of wasting? What might you do to change that?  Hands down....time.  Although I think we're all guilty of wasting time now and then, but most of the time wasting time means I have missed an opportunity.

4. Did  your family take regular vacations when you were a kid? Tell us something you remember about a family roadtrip from your own childhood.  Our big vacations were always too see the family in Alabama.  It always bothered me that we vacationed in Alabama....instead of the cool places all my friends and family went.  One year my parents, my aunt and I stayed in a cabin on the Santee Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina and traveled the Blue Ridge Hwy.  I loved it. We also traveled through Florida a lot.  My favorite place we frequented was Sanibel Island, and I have been to all the places tourists go like Weekee Watchee, Silver Springs, Bach Tower, Cape Canaveral, Howie in the Hills.  My parents loved to wander....so I don't really call these vacations....they loved vintage stuff....they loved old, weird....off the grid places....and so do I.  I made sure though that my children had vacations.  We have been to 48 of the 50 states.

5. If you could grow anything you wanted, what would you grow? Why?  Orchids. They are so dainty and I just love them. My best friend's mom grew them and they were all over their back yard.  When I married she sent one to me in a tube to be attached to my bouquet and when her granddaughter married Mrs. Schmidt made me my very own orchid corsage for directing the wedding. 
I am in agreement with Joyce.  I would love a huge English garden....just like the one at Anne Hathaways house in England.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  I write book reviews and just got the 50th anniversary edition of the book Christy.  The character in the story actually inspired me to teach.  Is there a book you have ever read that inspired something in you?  What was it?  Care to share?

Falling For Hodge Podge

1. What's something you'd rate a 10/10? Tell us why.
I have to agree with Joyce on this one....grandparenting. Why?  Because they light up my life. I don't have pictures on my school computer....sigh!  BUT my room is full of them.
 
2. What job would you be terrible at? What makes you think so? Anything that involves being up high or anything in the medical field.  I can't do heights...and I cannot do gross.
3. When did you last take a fall? What's something you're falling for (in a good way) these days? I not fallen in a few years.  I used to be a major source of falling entertainment for years.  My kids thought it was the funniest thing on earth. 
Something I'm falling for these days?  Baking, reading, crafting..we have a craft fair coming up in a few weeks and I am getting my stuff ready.
4. According to the Travel Channel here are some of America's best fall festivals- National Apple Harvest Festival (near Arendtsville PA, close to Gettysburg), Harvest on the Harbor (Portland Maine), German Village Festival (Columbus Ohio), Wellfleet Oyster Fest (Cape Cod), and Wine and Chile Fiesta (Santa Fe NM)  Have you ever been to any of the festivals listed? Which one appeals to you most? Does your hometown have any sort of fall celebration, and if so will you make it a point to attend?  I love Fall Festivals and have been to quite a few.  I haven't been to any of the festivals listed, but they all sound like fun so how do I pick just one? I think I'd go  to the National Apple Harvest Festival.  I LOVE apples.  I also would like the Harvest on the Harbor because I adore lobster and Maine in the fall is amazing!  I love the Cotton Pickin' Fair held in Gay, GA in October and May..   I also love the Hummingbird Festival in Hogansville, GA in the fall and some small but fun ones like  Crafts on the Median in Wedowee and Heritage Day in Freedonia, AL.  I enjoy them all.
5. What is your goodbye message to summer?
Dear Summer-
  You weren't too bad this year....but I am a fall fan and can't wait for the vibrant colors of the season.

A Jack Of All Trades

1. When you think about your future what do you fear most? Hope for the most?  Retirement and retirement.  I am afraid I will stop like my dad did when I retire and I can't wait til May when I retire and can do the things I love to do.

2. September is National Chicken Month. How often is chicken on the menu at your house? What's a favorite dish made with chicken? What's something you're a 'chicken' about doing or trying?  we love Chicken and eat it at least once a week...sometimes more.  My favorite dishes with Chicken is Chicken in a pot (a Greek inspired dish) and Poppy Seed Chicken made by Mrs. Jean from my church....but I will pretty much eat chicken any way it is served.  I LOVE Chicken enchilada's with green sauce from Tres Hermanos too.  I have not perfected the recipe yet.  I am chicken about doing anything that involves extreme heights....so no bungee jumping, et al for me.

3. What are three things you don't own but wish you did?   A vintage mustang, a Gibson guitar like the one Emmy Lou Harris plays, and a house in the mountains.

4. Would you rather be a jack of all trades or a master of one? Elaborate.  If you answered one, which one?  I am like my father....he was a master electrician....but a Jack of all trades.  My dad could do anything and I am my father's daughter.

5. Ketchup or mustard? On what?  Both...on hamburgers and hotdogs....ketchup only on French fries....sometimes.

6.  Insert your own random thought here. Hurricane Irma is frightening me.  I still have family and friends in South Florida so I am concerned for their safety.  I am also saddened by the wildfires in Montana.  I have been to many of the places that are now burned to the ground.  The Historic Lodge in Glacier National Park was one of the things on my bucket list.  I am sad because it is no more.  I guess you should always do things when you have the chance and not wait.

Hodge Podging Stuff

1. Did you watch the solar eclipse? Your thoughts? Sun Chips, Moon Pies, Starburst candies, a Blue Moon beer, a Sunkist orange, or a Milky Way candy bar...what's your favorite eclipse related snack on this list?  We absolutely watched the eclipse.  It was a big event at Wadley High School and we took the students out to the football field with their glasses for it. You could see the eclipse as it moved across the sky in our special glasses....but it did not get dark here like they said it would....so sad.  I made a decision to be where there is totality in 2024 when the next one happens.  Most of our teachers passed out Moon Pies, Sunkist, Milky Ways, and Starbursts.  

2. What are you 'over the moon' about these days? What's something you enjoy doing every 'once in a blue moon'?  I am over the moon about singing with the girls again in Still Magnolias.  We got to sing together for the first time in two years on Saturday night.  It was awesome.  What do I enjoy doing every once in a while????  Don't laugh....but  eating a Moon Pie.  Every now and then I actually crave one.

3. Tell us about something in the realm of science that interests you. How do you feed that interest?
I have to agree with Joyce.  We have hummingbirds and the ins and outs of the little fellows amaze me.  I love to watch them fly, fight, eat.  I am also amazed by storms and the majesty and power of lightening.  When I was a child squalls before a hurricane absolutely fascinated me.

4. What are a few things you remember about going back to school as a child?  I remember going to Davis' 5 & 10 for new school supplies and hearing the wooden floors squeak under our feet, getting a real cigar box for pencils from the cigar store, my first day dress, the  new shoes I got and how they hurt my feet til I got them stretched out.  First days and last days have always been my favorites....

5. I've seen several versions of this around the net so let's make one of our own...share with us five words that touch your soul and briefly tell us why.

daddy-warmth, comfort - It is well with my soul.. 

dream-I too have always been a dreamer.

Lightening - show me the majesty of God and all his power.  There is a bit of fear that is experienced with the majesty.

The first football game starts this week with a Jamboree.  Do schools in  your areas do this?  It is a showcase of the teams.  This week our theme is going to be Beach the Bulldogs and the kids will be dressed up in Beach Attire.  I am not a huge fan of this dress up thing....it causes the kids to be less than focused.  I feel they should do all this during the pep rallys....not during the day..  What about you?  How do you feel about pep rallys and dress up during school?

Wednesday Hodge Podge Throw Down

1. We've reached edition number 315 here in the Wednesday Hodgepodge. So tell us, what were you doing at 3:15 yesterday? Is that typical? On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being low and 10 being high) what's your energy level usually like at 3:15 PM?  At 3:15 yesterday afternoon I preparing for Revival at my church. I sang last night and was practicing what I was going to do. Revival is a once a year event beginning the fourth Sunday in the month of July. My energy level at 3:15 is usually around a 4.

2. A frisbee, a tantrum, a towel, a party, a punch, or a curveball...which have you most recently thrown or had thrown at/for you? Elaborate.  The first five do not apply to me.  I have had a couple of curveballs thrown at me.  We have flex days this year that we are supposed to be allowed to do if we attended conferences and classes during the summer....so both of my principals have scheduled Open Houses during those flex days.  I made plans to go see my friend Susan in Knoxville....and have decided...I am going to Knoxville.  I earned the time.

 3. What are three things that would help you right now. Tell us how or why.  Preparation of my class for the first day.  First months lesson plans done and in the book.  Someone to clean my house.

4. Do you think you're strong? Why or why not? What makes you strong?  Yes I think I'm pretty strong mentally.  Physically I am not very strong.  I, like Joyce,  place my hope and trust in the Lord and that gives me the courage and fortitude to have peace amidst the chaos of life, to handle the curveballs and hard things we all face at one time or another. Not saying I get this right all the time, but He is the cornerstone I build my life upon. 

5. Do you enjoy reading historical fiction? What's your favorite book set sometime in the past?  Yes I do. It's always hard to pick just one favorite anything, but it's especially tough to choose a favorite book. One of my very favorites set in the past is Anna Karenina. Not a quick read, but so so good.  I also reviewed a great book that took place in Ireland during WWII called Grounded Hearts.  Loved it.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Frank and I are wanting to see Dunkirk.  Most of our friends who have seen it....loved it.  What is your reaction if you have seen it.  Is it a go to the movies and spend a fortune to see kind of movie?  ...or is it a wait til it comes out on DVD one?

Fishing for Wednesday Hodge Podge Answers

1. Have you ever been fishing? Did you catch a fish? If so did you keep it or throw it back? If you haven't been fishing is that something you'd like to try?

Fish out of water, big fish in a small pond, living in a fishbowl, packed in like sardines, this is a fine kettle of fish, plenty of fish in the sea, fish or cut bait...which fishy phrase most recently applies to some area of your life? 

I have been fishing many times and enjoy it a lot.  I have caught many fish, thrown some back, kept some for eating.  Right now the end of the school year is fast approaching and I would have to say fish or cut bait.  That is how I feel trying to get my seniors to do their work.

2. What's something you're always fishing for in your purse, wallet, desk, or kitchen junk drawer?  My keys and my cell phone.  They seem to disappear in my purse.

3. Your favorite fish tale or movie?  Finding Nemo and Big Fish

4. Are you sunrise, daylight, twilight or night? Explain why you chose your answer.  I am sunrise.  Definitely a morning person and I love to get up early, grab a cup of coffee and watch the sun rise.  It makes my day.
5. What's the oldest piece of clothing you own and still wear?  It WAS a pair of Birkenstocks from the very early 80's.  I discarded them in January.  Now it is a jacket and sweatshirt from my early Auburn days.....1985.
6. We've got one more month of (officially) winter here in the Northern hemisphere. Are you feeling the need for a getaway? What's been the best and worst part of your winter so far?  I am so ready for a getaway.  Spring Break for us is the last week in March.  It cannot get here soon enough.  The worst part of winter so far....is one day it is cold....and the next day it is 70 and we are wearing shorts and flip flops.
7.  The Wednesday Hodgepodge lands on National Margarita Day...will you be celebrating? Frozen or on the rocks? Are you a Jimmy Buffet fan? If so, what's your favorite JB tune?  I will not be celebrating....but if I did...frozen would be my choice since it is supposed to be 75 here today.  I love Jimmy Buffet and if I have to chose a favorite song it would be Come Monday.

Last November Hodge Podge

Welcome to the end of November and the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Raise your hand if your autumn flew by in the blink of an eye. If you've answered today's questions add your link at the end of Joyce's post. And be sure to leave a comment for the blogger linking before you because the best way to spread Christmas cheer is commenting loud for all to hear...something like that. Okay here we go-

1. Give us three rhyming words that say something about your Thanksgiving holiday (or your most recent holiday gathering if you didn't celebrate Thanksgiving).
Blessed with a huge mess in a shared nest.
2. When did you last say, 'the more the merrier'? Did you mean it?  It is a common phrase in my family.   We're more the merrier kind of people.  One year we packed over 30 of us in my cousins town house apt for the holidays. It was wall to wall beds....but loads of love. This year we rented a condo that sleeps six for us to spend Thanksgiving in....we were planning on throwing down an air mattress and sleeping eight....but at the last minute my cousin and her friend took her camper and camped near us.  It was a good idea.  Eight would have been too much.
3. What's one piece of advice you'd give someone who is your same age?  Embark on an adventure, make sure you have things to do....at least 26 when you retire.  Don't wait to do things....do them now.
4. You're ordering a veggie plate, what four veggies are on it?   Green beans, boiled red potatoes, boiled cabbage, and red ripe summer tomatoes! 
5. Shop til you drop! Did you? Have you ever? Will you between now and Christmas?
When I was younger I've shopped til I dropped.  I don't enjoy it any more.  I definitely do not enjoy Black Friday.  I shop all year so I am pretty much done by Thanksgiving.  I have now become a couple of hours kind of shopper.
6. What's your favorite chair in your house, and why is it a favorite?  My recliner.  I can see out the French doors from it, I can see the Christmas tree, I can read, I can relax.  Love my little corner of the den.

7. Share an early memory of faith, religion, or spirituality.  I grew up in church too and was not the child that needed prodding to attend. I loved it, and still do. My parents did not send me to church.  They took me to church.  They modeled faith for me.  Christmas was a holy time in my house and it revolved around Christ's birth.  Every night my dad would read from the Bible some part of the birth story.  I did the same with my kids.
8. Insert your own random thought here.  I am going to borrow Joyce's random thought.....If you're a person who prays please remember the firefighters, emergency personnel, and residents of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, and the surrounding Smoky Mountain area of East Tennessee where fires have devastated the beautiful landscape and many homes, buildings, and schools. The high winds yesterday contributed to the rapid spread and the photographs are devastating. It's a part of the country so near and dear to the Korb's hearts, and we have family  and dear friends not far from there. 

Moving On With Wednesday Hodge Podge

Joyce took some time off last week but  here are the questions to this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog then hop back here to share answers with the rest of the world. See you there-

1. What would you say is the best and worst thing about moving house? The best is starting fresh somewhere else and getting to change up your décor.  The worst has to be leaving friends behind and packing up all the stuff you thought you had to have.  You find yourself asking...."why was this important?"  Unpacking once you arrive is not a piece of cake either.  We moved last 7 years ago and I am still finding things.  Frank and I are itinerate preachers....so we can be moved any time at all.
2. What's moved you recently?  It Is Well by the Issacs.  I heard it yesterday and was moved tears.

 3. Do you feel your life is moving forward, backward, or is on hold? How so?  It depends on the day.  Some days I am charging forward with amazing clarity.  Other's I meet a headwind that thrusts me backwards.
4. On the move, move mountains, get a move on, it's your move, or bust a move...which phrase best applies to some aspect of your life right now? Explain.  I am moving mountains.  I have so much I want to accomplish and when I feel as if I have met a mountain that is too big....I say a prayer and God and I move that bad boy.
5. What song makes you want to get up and move?  To be honest....I have a couple.  The first is by Toby Mac called Move.

 

 6. Your favorite snack to grab when you're 'on the move'?  Pretzels, an apple, or some cheese.
7. What one accessory makes your house feel like home? Family pictures.
8. Insert your own random thought here. What is fall like where you live?  I grew up in South Florida....there was no fall.  I love the seasonal changes we  have here in Alabama.  Leaves are starting to change and there is a crispness in the air.  What is your favorite season?  Bet you can't
guess....mine is Fall in Cades Cove.

 

The Aftermath Hodge Podge

1. What's changed in your life, home, or community since your last birthday?
I am a year closer to retirement.  There was a tragic murder in the community that saddened us all.  There was a hostage situation in the county.  Frank finished Course of Study. I went to Michigan over the summer.  Still living in Rock Mills, Still teaching in Randolph County, Still preaching at Midway UMC.  I have to admit I am enjoying constant right now.
2. September is Classical Music Month. Do you like/listen to classical music? If so what's a favorite piece and/or who is a favorite composer?  I like some classical music and will sometimes play it when I'm doing housework. Pachelbel's Canon in D Major is my favorite.  I also listen to some of the livelier pieces so I will move faster.  LOL 
3. Besides The Bible, what's a book that has positively changed your life, relationships, career, or perspective? How so?  When I read the question, then read Joyce's answer I started thinking about my own answer I decided to use Joyce's response.  Several books came to my mind immediately, and I could easily come up with a list of ten. but, like Joyce I went with My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers. I too am re-reading it again this year and I also agree with Joyce that it is absolutely jam-packed full of life-changing wisdom.  
4. I read (here) these ten hobbies will make you smarter...play a musical instrument, read voraciously, meditate regularly, work out your brain (puzzles, sudoku, board games, etc), exercise often, learn a new language, write your feelings down (blog, journal, just write), travel to new places, cook different kinds of meals, participate in sports actively
Are any on this list your current hobbies? Which hobby on the list would you be most inclined to try?
I currently read voraciously, pray regularly, work out my brain, exercise, write, travel and cook. I love to travel...and I love to plan the trip. I love puzzles and word games.   I am not currently learning a new language, but I do teach one and play refresher games to keep me on top.   
5. What sports traditions does your family have?  Go Noles! (hubby)  War Eagle (me).
6. In a few words, weigh in on the current football/National Anthem brouhaha. Keep it family friendly please.  I am appalled, ashamed, disappointed, and think NOONE should watch or attend ANY event.  We stand and pledge the flag every morning at my school.  I cannot make my students pledge....but they are required to stand out of respect....and I have never had a problem with any of them.  The 9-11 protest broke my heart.  I back the blue....and the firefighters....who all ran INTO the building while others were running out. 
7. Where do you have loads of patience, and where do you most lack patience?
I do not have loads of patience for the most part. I am patient when it comes to  baking, grocery shopping, crafting (as long as it is going right), shoe shopping, writing and reading.   Obviously Joyce and I are related on the impatient things....since our answers are the same.  What I do not have patience for are people driving way too slow in the left lane, particularly if it's because they're texting, (also, p.s.a-the left lane is for passing...just throwing that out there in case you're one of the drivers who try my patience), chronic complainers, laziness on the job, and technology glitches. And obviously I have no patience for highly paid professional athletes who use the 'workplace' as a means of protest.

August Farewell Hodge Podge

Okay, here we go...read Joyce's questions, answer on your own blog like I did, , then hop back over here at your convenience, by clicking right here....and then add your link to the party.

1.  Are there any men or women in blue on your family tree? Frank is a reerve Deputy for Randolph County.  I have a cousin who was a city police officer....but no more that I know of.

2. Are you someone who suffers from the Sunday night blues? What helps you get over it?  Sometimes Sunday night blues do get a hold of me, especially if I had a busy weekend with no down time.. Usually I begin to dwell on something good that is going to happen during the week ahead, or read my Bible, or a book I need to read, I write....or....and don't laugh.  I watch Guys Grocery Games....I know...not too profound.  But he makes me laugh.

3. I read the color blue is an appetite suppressant since there are very few naturally blue foods out there. How do you feel about blue cheese? Love it or blech? If you're a fan, what's something you like that's made with blue cheese?  I do no like blue cheese at all.  I don't like the smell or the taste.  It is nasty and if it were the only cheese around....I would never eat cheese.
4. We can't head in to the Labor Day weekend without a related question, can we? Complete this thought: I work best when I have some music soothing my soul and putting me in the zone. 

5. 'Everything yields to diligence .' Antiphanes Your thoughts? (on this particular quote or on diligence in general).  I believe that diligence is the constant...pressing forward....and yes...it is almost like a snowball effect....you begin....are diligent....and the world gets out of your way.  That is the best I have before drinking a cup of coffee.
6. The National Park Service turned 100 years old on August 25th. Have you been to many of America's National Parks? If so share with us a favorite or two. Which National Park would you most like to visit before the next birthday rolls around?   I love all the ones I have been to, because I love historical places.  I would love to go back to Yellowstone and actually stay at the Yellowstone Lodge....and spend more than just a day.

 

I will be back in the Smokey Mountains again this year.  I love Cades Cove....of all the ones The Grand Canyon was probably my favorite of all.

8.  Can you believe that stores are already putting out their Christmas stuff?  I love Hobby Lobby....but they are decked out to the hilt! How do you feel about this????  Can each holiday not have it's moment in the sun????

A Salute To The Red, White, and Hodge Podge

1.  How did you welcome the month of July, and tell us one fun thing you did to celebrate the 4th. (or the weekend for any non-USA residents playing along today)

How did I welcome July? We had a bbq at Marcie's house on Sunday and ate hamburgers and hotdogs poolside at Beth's on Monday.  Lots of fun....lots of love. One fun thing we did to celebrate the 4th? Visited with good friends over good food.

2. Right now...what's your favorite red thing? white thing? blue thing?

My favorite red thing is watermelon...oh yeah and strawberries. White thing? The fluffy clouds of the summer.  I love to lay in the grass and look at them.  Lately....I have been wishing they were gray and  heavy with rain.   Blue thing? The Water of Lake Huron.....it was gorgeous.
3. Wave the white flag, raise a red flag, fly your freak flag...which 'flag' have you flown most recently? Explain.  Wave the white flag. Three women....one car....too many miles....too much to see in 5 days....., combined to force my surrender to exhaustion.  

4. According to Cond Nast Traveler these are the seven best places to visit in July-

a boat safari in Botswanna's Okavango Delta, Riviera Maya Mexico (it's whale shark season and apparently you can swim with them), Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Pamploma Spain, St. Petersburg Russia, the Fuji Rock Festival at Mount Naeba Japan, the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg Austria

If time and money weren't factors would you want to see any/all of these? Which would you most like to see and why?  Sure I'd like to see them. Why not? On someone else's dime?  I've been to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.  I have also done the Riviera Maya Mexico and it was gorgeous....I was not there in time to swim with the white sharks.....darn!  I will make sure I plan to not be there next time. Of the options listed I'm not too comfortable with the boat safari in the Botswanna Delta. I was not crazy about the safari boat ride at Disneyworld.

5. Grilled cheese, pimento cheese, or mac and cheese...your favorite from the cheesy treats listed? 

Pimento cheese please. I like to make my own, but  I also love Debo's and Beth's versions. Mrs. Betty Jean's mac and cheese is a close contender.   Yummm.

6.  What makes you sweat?  You mean besides this incredible heat and humidity we have been experiencing in the South? Anything that is daring, dangerous, or frightening make me sweat.

7. Your favorite movie with a 'patriotic' theme of some sort? I have agree with Joyce on this one and say Apollo 13. Maybe not what you typically think of as patriotic, but I love that film and when I watch it I feel pride in my country. The whole nation held it's collective breath in the summer of 1970 and the bravery, ingenuity, and adventurous spirit of those involved in getting that spacecraft home feels patriotic to me. I also love Green Beret with John Wayne, We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, and Black Hawk Down,  are some others I really love. 

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  Have any of you ever been to Jungle Jim's in Ohio????  It is like....hum....The Farmer's Market, World Market, Fresh Foods, Whole Foods, and an International Bazaar on steroids.  AMAZING!

 

It's The Good Old Summertime Hodge Podge

 1. It's officially summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway). Which summer month is best and why?  June is the best month for me because my summer break has just started, it is my daughter's birthday, in fact I have a lot of special June birthday's and anniversaries.  I always go to the beach in June.  August is my least favorite.....I start back to school on August 1.2. Can you swim? How did you learn? June 27th is National Sunglasses Day. How many pair do you own?  Yes, I can swim.  I learned through swimming lessons at the YWCA in West Palm Beach.  I held my Junior and Senior life guarding certificates.  I own one pair of sunglasses....they re prescription glasses.3. What characteristic do you judge most harshly in yourself? How about in others?  For me it is the lack of patience and self-control.  Sometimes my mouth overloads my brain.  For others it would be  ignorance.  There is no reason on this earth for people to delight in being ignorant and allow their children to follow suit.4. Robert Frost wrote the now well known poem entitled The Road Not Taken. What's a road (literal or figurative) you've always wanted to travel, and where do you hope it takes you? Literally....Route 66 from start to finish, roads west....as far as Alaska, the Ultimate cover the whole USA Road trip (as seen on Facebook).  You know...See the USA in your Chevrolet.

5. Popsicles-yay or nay? If you answered yay, what's your favorite flavor? Popsicles....I can take them or leave them.  I like fruity tastes if I eat one. I do not like those juice things in plastic that you buy by the 100's in a box for things like VBS.

6. Brexit-on a scale of 1-10 how knowledgeable are you on what's involved here? (1=very knowledgeable and 10=what's Brexit) Is this news you'll follow or is it something you think won't impact your life in any way shape or form?  I am about a 6.  I know just enough to be dangerous. It is news I will follow and it will impact my life....so far it has impacted my retirement a bit because of the stock market shift.7. Share a favorite song on your summer play list. Summer Time by Ella Fitzgerald.

June And Wednesday Hodge Podging

1. I read here a list of 13 things you should do in June. I'm paraphrasing a little but basically...

Go on a road trip with your best friend, pick fresh strawberries, host a garden party, take a morning run, treat yourself to a flower bouquet, spend a whole day hiking, discover a new coffee shop, try a new ice cream flavor, read at least one book, visit a Farmer's Market, make a swing for your home, and visit a new city. 

Which thing on the list do you most want to do? Of the activities mentioned, which one holds the least appeal? How many on the list will you attempt in June? What's one thing you'd add to the list? 

Of the activities listed I probably most want to go on a road trip with my best friend.  Will that happen in June? I just got home from a road trip with my best friend/sister/cousin to Knoxville and one from PCB with my best friend/husband/Porch People family.  Which one holds the least appeal? Making a swing for my home. 

How many on the list will I attempt in June? A road trip,a flower bouquet, , ice cream on the last day of VBS, definitely a trip or two to the Farmer's Market and I'll for sure read a new book or four, visit a new city, discover a new coffee shop.
What would I add to the list? Junk store and craft show visits added to a couple of Weds. trips to Ruth's Flea Market, and visits to the Public Library.

 

2. What's something you could do today to feel more peaceful?  Pray

3.June 7th is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. Are you a fan? Swiss mocha, rocky road, chocolate chocolate chip, peanut butter and chocolate, or a dish of plain chocolate...what's your pleasure?
Plain Chocolate is my all time favorite.

 

4. If you came with a warning what would it say?  I have to agree with Joyce's answer.  Caution: Excessive Talker 

5.What's the most interesting website you've visited in the last week?  Pinterest, of course.

 

6.Spring, summer, autumn, winter...which season are you? Why?  Spring because of the flowers that bloom and Autumn because of the colors.

Would you agree with that sentiment? Explain why or why not.  Yes because traveling makes me aware that I am a small fish in a large pond.

I have not been to the movies lately.  It is now summer and the theater here has a senior matinee so I am planning on gorging on a few Tuesday movies.  Have you been lately?  What would you recommend.  I want a good, sappy, chick flick please...but would consider other options. 

Summertime And The Living Is Easy

We're kicking off this first day of June with another edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. If you've answered this week's questions be sure to add your link at the end of Joyce's post. Then go say something nice to the blogger linking before you because today is National Say Something Nice Day.  Ready or not....here we go!

1. Tell us about one fun thing on your June calendar.  My daughter was born 36 years ago on June 23rd.  That makes my heart sing.

2. How careful are you in the sun? Do you tan or burn? Do you make it a point to see the dermatologist every year?  I just got back from the beach.  I am careful, I wear sunscreen, I turn red then tan.  I do not see a dermatologist every year but I do have my doctor check out any weird spots. 

3.  Describe a time when you wanted to 'throw in the towel'.  I got my Masters Degree with three children all actively involved in sports and school(I have studied in the bleachers during a basketball game), doing all the household chores, and working full time.  About half way through I was tired and wanted to give up.  I almost did.....but my advisor talked to me and I stayed the course.

4.  What's a song you love that has a day of the week in the title or lyrics? 

One?  You only want me to pick one?  Griefus!  Again with the pick one? My favorite is

Monday, Monday by the Mama's and the Papa's.  On it's heals would be Come Monday by Jimmy Buffet.

5.  Are you a fan of berries? Which one's your favorite? What's the most recent berry dish you've eaten? Which blueberry breakfast food appeals to you most-blueberry pancakes, blueberry yogurt, or a blueberry muffin?   I love berries. Blueberries and strawberries are my favorite, but when it comes to berries I'm really not picky. I had blueberry pancakes for breakfast on Friday and we had strawberry shortcake last night for dessert.  On Memorial Day we ate a mixed berry pie.  During the summer berries are a staple.  As far as picking a favorite between blueberry pancakes, yogurt, or muffins....my answer would be.....yes.  I love them all.
6.  What's something you want to do before your next birthday?  See my daughter.  She and her husband are missionaries in Moldova.  I hope I get to see them in October.

7.  June 1st is National Say Something Nice Day, so let's all say something nice here.

I love having lunch at Dusty's Oyster Bar on Front Beach Road.  The atmosphere is most entertaining.

 

I love naps in the outdoors.  Obviously Kruze does.  She slept close to three hours right here and never moved. 

 

I have to brag a bit and tell you.....I love my husband....he rented a cart while we were in Florida to give Keaton (stroke victim) some mobility and we enjoyed it with the whole McCarley family.  The kids really got a kick out of it.  We took the family to Pier Park one night so the kids could ride the train, etal....and when we got them back to the motel there was no coaxing them to sleep. 

 

 

 

Wednesday Hodge Podge

Some weeks you get a clever title and some weeks you get just a title. On this last Wednesday in May our fearless leader went with option B for the win. 1.  How should success be measured? Using that as your standard, who is the most successful person you know? (or one of the most successful?) For me, success is defined as that moment in time when I feel like I wouldn't switch my life with anyone else's in this world.  My daughter Kat, a missionary in Moldova, is who I think of when I think of successful.2. Have you ever been to a hot air balloon launch/fest/party? Ever taken a ride in a hot air balloon? Is that on your bucket list? No and it is not on my bucket list of to do things.  Which one on the list would you most like to experience?  Spending a month living in the UK and exploring Alaska would be on my bucket list.

3. May 25th is National Brown-Bag It Day. Did you/will you pack a lunch today? When did you last pack a lunch for someone and what are your go-to ingredients for a brown bag lunch?   I did not pack a lunch today because school is out for the summer.  I wish Pinterest had been around when my kids were little. 

4. What's one of your favorite dance scenes from a movie or television show?  The tango scene with Antonio Banderas in Let's Dance. It is very sultry and seductive.

5. John F. Kennedy made famous the line, "...Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." So what can you do for your country?  I am going to borrow from Joyce here because her answers would be my answers.  Respect the flag. Support the men and women who make up the armed forces. Vote. Lend a helping hand to lift up my community or state in some way. Treat people with kindness.  Get out and see this place I call home, appreciate the beauty that is everywhere. 

6. Weekends are made for________________________.  Fun, church, and everything else I didn't get done during the week.....this is especially true during the school year.

Graduation Week Hodge Podge

1.  Tell us about a time you found yourself 'in the middle of nowhere'. Was this deliberate? 

The family drove to California....nonstop.  I was driving...it was the middle of the night.....we were in the middle of the dessert....I could SEE the lights of Winslow Arizona.....but the longer I drove the farther away they got.....there was absolutely nothing on the highway.  All the family was sound asleep in the car....so it was just me....and the road. It was kind of scary and I guess it was deliberate.  I was never so glad to see the lights of a city in my life.  We ended up spending the night there.

2. What's something you're in the middle of today or this week?   Final exams and graduations. I have four graduations to attend this week.  Tonight will be my third one.  I have to admit that I am graduation WEAK!

3. At what age do you think 'middle age' begins? What does it mean to be 'middle aged'? 

When I was a child I would have said 30.  Then I hit 30 and thought it was 40.  I think 50 is middle age even though most people don't live to be 100.  I like that number.  I can't read the fine print without assistance. I wake stiff and sound like Rice Krispies (I snap, crackle, and pop). I don't take good health for granted, and I spend a lot of time managing said health.  I find myself looking forward to retirement and slowing down.  I enjoy things more.

4. Ravioli, stuffed peppers, samosas, deviled eggs, steamed dumplings, peirogis, or a jelly donut...your favorite food (from this list!) with something yummy in the middle. Your favorite not on the list?   My least favorite on the list is stuffed peppers.  I truly despise them.  My mom used to make me eat them as a child and even the smell of them makes me gag even today.  I love jelly donuts, steamed dumplings and peirogis.  My favorite not on the list of stuffed goodies would be a cannoli...especially if I am in Italy.  I owuld pick a cannoli over any of the ones on the list.

5. Albert Einstein is quoted as saying,"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." Would you agree? Have you found this to be true in your own life? Feel free to elaborate. 

Oh yes I agree.  I have to agree with Joyce and her daughter... in order to know you can do hard things you have to do hard things.  Sometimes I go ahead and wallow....but other times I succeed in finding the blessing in the difficulty.  
 

6. What's a song you remember loving from your middle school years? Do you love it still? 

Traces by Dennis Yost and The Classics IV, Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In by the 5th Dimension, This Girl Is A Woman Now, by Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye, Galveston by Glen Campbell, Barry Sandler's Ballad of the Green Beret (always made me cry....still does), California Dreamin' by the Mama's and the Papa's, ...and my list goes on.  I still love every single one of these songs.  Several years ago my dear friend, Carol, made me a whole collection of CD's from the 60's and 70's.  This is one of my prized collections.

7. May 18th is National Visit Your Relatives Day. Will you celebrate? Which relative would you visit if time, distance, and expense were not considered?  I wish I could.  I guess Frank will be the relative I will visit with today.  I would visit my daughter in Moldova if I could....but alas...it is not going to happen.

First Of May Hodge Podge

Welcome to another edition of The Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer the questions on your own blog, link up on Joyce's blog, and then be sure to leave a comment for the blogger who linked before you. Here we go-

1. What's something fun you're looking forward to on your May calendar?  That is easy peasy!  The end of the school year, graduation, and then...... fun Memorial Day weekplans with our Porch People Rock Mill friends in PCB!  I am counting the days!

2. What are some images that come to mind when you hear the word mother?  Well when I think of my own mother I tend to picture her d baking in the kitchen, working in the garden, at the beach,  dancing....but during the dark years after my brother died I see at the kitchen table from sun up til sunset.....smoking and playing Solitaire.... Then I had children of my own and I think of the love she has showered on my kids in a hundred little ways. I think of all the trips and adventures she created for them so I could finish college. I think of her....everyday.....and wish I could pick up a phone and call her right now.

3. What's something beautiful you own or have seen that's made of glass? I have a checkerboard cut crystall pineapple and a cross that my friend Mary bought for me when we were in Hawaii.  I wouldn't buy either because I thought they were too pricey.  She surprised me with them on the plane trip home and I was terrified they would break.

4. Was today typical? If not what made it unusual?   Today was a school day which is typical....at least for two more weeks.  I left my phone at my first school which is also typical....I need my phone attached to me.....after choir we went to Jeff's Place for dinner...again typical.....but no one else went with us.....unusual.....and Jeff's was empty.....very unusual.

5. What is a quality you wish you could have more of?  Patience. 

6. What's the next major purchase you need to make? Will it happen in the month of May? 

We need a new car for Frank, but we won't be ready for that until October/November.

7. What responsibility/job/work did you dislike while growing up but has proved helpful to you as an adult?  I am with Joyce on this one.  It was probably most basic household chores...recognizng that these chores need to be done every.single.week or in some cases daily whether you feel like it or not.
